Department Manager / Buyer – Tropical Plants - Saanich

This is a temporary parental leave coverage position for approximately 12–18 months.
We’re seeking a passionate indoor plant enthusiast with a love for plants and people. As our Indoor Tropical Plant Department Manager, you’ll curate a high-quality houseplant assortment that delights guests, drives sales, and reflects our brand.
This role combines strategic buying, plant expertise, and hands-on retail leadership in a fast-paced, guest-focused environment.
What You’ll Do
- Provide expert guidance to guests on plant selection and long-term care
- Plan, source, and purchase a diverse assortment of tropical plants, foliage, flowering houseplants, and specialty specimens that meet sales goals, inventory targets, and margin expectations.
- Analyze sales trends, stock levels, and customer demand to make data-driven buying decisions, adjusting for seasonality and trends.
- Foster strong relationships with growers, ensuring access to premium-quality plants and timely deliveries.
- Maintain optimal in-store plant care practices, including watering schedules, integrated pest management (IPM, and maintenance
- Collaborate with the store merchandiser to create inspiring, trend-forward displays that reflect the brand and enhance guest experience.
- Train and mentor retail staff, sharing product knowledge and sales techniques.
Is this you?
- A genuine passion for indoor tropical plants and a love for connecting people to growing.
- Experience in retail operations, with strong product knowledge and an understanding of plant care requirements.
- Proven success analyzing sales and inventory data to make informed purchasing decisions.
- Skilled in diagnosing plant health issues, identifying pests and diseases, and implementing corrective action.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills with vendors and internal teams.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed, with the ability to multitask in a dynamic environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and POS or inventory systems.
- Comfortable working in a greenhouse or indoor retail plant environment and capable of performing regular lifting, including weekends and peak seasonal periods.
